Our five hectares of vines are spread out over 26 small parcels scattered throughout the valley between the villages of Pünderich, Briedel, Zell, St. Aldegund and Briedern. One third of our vineyards consist of old, sometimes pre-war, ungrafted Riesling vines trained in the traditional “Einzelpfahlerziehung” (single post) way on steep, dry-walled terraces. In addition to Riesling we also farm three different Pinot varieties and one plot of Johanniter.
Our approach to farming is mostly characterized by what we simply think of as common sense and a respect for the living, breathing ecosystem that surrounds us. We intervene as little as possible; our soils are alive and our vines dig their roots deep into the poor slate soils, undisturbed by chemical inputs such as herbicides and fertilizers. We strongly believe in the complexity of Nature’s innumerable cycles and that manipulating them only results in more additional “corrections” being necessary. Our goal is to always follow her, perhaps sometimes guide her and, most importantly, perpetually learn from her wisdom.
